Extended Family & Corpus Aviary

Aguilar-Ortiz and Contreras-Macias

Aguilar-Ortiz is the extended family from the Mama Mucy side of the house and Contreras-Macias corresponds to the Papa Jaime side. Maintaining close relationships with relatives is a cornerstone of the Contreras family ethos. Regular visits to Corpus Christi and Nuevo Laredo, where many relatives reside, strengthen these bonds. Family traditions, shared meals, and collective celebrations foster a sense of unity and belonging. These connections not only preserve cultural heritage but also provide a supportive network, ensuring that the Contreras family remains tightly knit and resilient.

The Aguilar-Ortiz side is all about the baseball. Grandpa Ramon still plays on the weekends. Prior to our marriage, Papa Jaime and Mama Mucy became Godparents for a daughter (America, daughter of Uncle Chuy) and son (Alejandro, son of Uncle Junior) of each of her two brothers. She has a lot of family in Nuevo Laredo but also has family in Saltillo Mexico.

Contreras-Macias is the extended family from the Papa Jaime side of the house. Originally from Crystal City (officially declared by President Reagan as the “spinach capital of the world”), my parents now live in Corpus Christi (home of Selena). Uncle Carlos and his family also live there.  The Contreras-Macias grandparents were the first to take photos of Jimmy and stepped up as Godparents for his baptism when a close friend was unable to comply. In addition to our family in Corpus Christi, we also have extended family in Austin, San Antonio and, of course, Crystal City.

Corpus Christi Aviary

Lil Petey is a jenday conjure, also known as a jandaya parakeet.
Loki is a blue front amazon parrot, known for being talkative.
Pumpkin is a rose-breasted cockatoo, known in Australia as a galah.

When you visit Grandpa Lucio and Grandma Lupe, you must say hello to their three feathered companions: Petey, Loki, and Pumpkin.

Lil Petey looks like a sweetie but he’s fearless. He’ll take on anyone, even though he’s tiny. Brave but also likes to have his way. The first to join the Contreras-Macias family.

Loki is named after the brother of Thor. Not quite a Norse god but he is a mischievous and talkative bird. He laughs and sings and brings general joy to the household. One of his favorite songs is “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash.

Pumpkin is the only one of our feathered friends that has taken a liking to Grandma Lupe.  Pumpkin does not talk as much as Loki, but he can at least say “Hello, Pumpkin.” He is very cute and glad to be a part of the family.
